Die-hard boxing fans everywhere will be tuning in to HBO this Saturday - October the 13th, for one hell of a fight card. And by hell, I mean satisfyingly awesome.
Nonito Donaire (29-1,18 KO) vs. Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 KO)
Brandon Rios (30-0-1, 22 KO) vs. Mike Alvarado (33-0, 23 KO)
These are the kinds of match-ups that make you forget about the disappointments for a moment, and leave you with feelings of anticipation and excitement.
Rios/Alvarado is expected to be a barn burner for however long it lasts. Brandon Rios is a tough, gritty, skillful fighter who leaves himself open for exchanges. His style is fun to watch, especially when he lets his hands go. Mike Alvarado is a brawler! He is a determined fighter with loads of heart, and will give it everything he's got. And he knows how to comeback after he's been down on the cards, so you can bet the farm that this will not be an easy night for his opponent. A lot will depend on how good of shape Rios is in. Either way, I am anticipating a war! This match-up was tailor-made for fans. Some are already calling it a FOTY candidate.
Donair/Nishioka is another great match-up. You have two of the best fighters in the Super Bantam division, fighting each other. Can't have too many complaints about that. Nonito Donaire is an exceptional talent, I am a huge fan. His last few victories may have lacked the intensity some fight fans were expecting, but there is no denying that what he does is truly special. Some have talked about Toshiaki Nishioka's age (36) being a huge disadvantage, but truth is he's a really good, really smart, really accomplished fighter. Not someone you would ever want to underestimate by any means. He most definitely deserves more credit then he probably gets.
So make sure you tune in on Saturday night, and enjoy a great night of boxing. It doesn't happen like this all the time.
